What are Pink Diamonds?
Pink diamonds are fancy coloured diamonds with a pinkish to reddish hue. Although most coloured gems achieve colour variations by chemical impurities or trace minerals, this is not the case for pink diamonds. The reason pink diamonds achieve their stunning colour is still not known.
Where are Pink Diamonds Found?
Pink diamond is the rarest of all diamonds except red diamonds. Pink diamonds, over time, have been found in Brazil, India, South Africa, Russia, Canada and Australia. The most productive, by far, was the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia. During its 37 years in operation, the Argyle mine produced 90% of the world’s pink diamond supply. It is said that only one carat of sellable pink diamonds will come from every one million carats of diamonds mined. Rarity of pink diamonds will only increase with the closure of the Argyle mine in 2020.
Pink Diamond Value
The rarity of pink diamonds makes them expensive, and prices can vary dramatically. With so many shades and variants, prices can range from $10,000 to over half a million dollars a carat larger specimens in a deep intense pink.
Key factors influencing the price of pink diamonds are the intensity of colour and their carat weight. The value of a pink diamond goes through the roof as their colour intensity and size grows. A modifying tone of the diamond also has the ability to affect the pricing. If the pink diamond has a purplish modifier, the price would be less than a diamond without one.
With the closure of the Argyle Mine in 2020 the value of certified pink diamonds is set to increase. Pink diamonds are growing in popularity and proving to be a great investment with annual growth averaging around 13.8%.
