The concept, offset the diamonds in a wider band. Some swirls would be hand engraved giving the ring the feeling of a wave. To help the the ring stand up to every day use we would bezel set the diamonds for extra protection. The bezel’s were white gold in the yellow gold setting. When we finally reached our goal we were probably more excited than our followers to draw a winner. The winner was a beautiful lady from the Southern Highlands and when we met we hit it off straight away. I spoke to her and her mother about a Ceylon Sapphire that her grandmother had purchased overseas many years ago. We went for a 3 stone trilogy ring where the Ceylon stunner is set between two smaller (but not small) diamonds we would source. Emerald cut diamonds were the chosen shape and working to a budget we thought we would be able to source two 0.45ct diamonds. Working within our budget, we reached out to suppliers and fortunately found a pair of 0.50ct GIA certified diamonds with great clarity in the chosen shape. With so many types of gems, sizes and shapes gemstone sourcing can be a challenging part of our work. The initial’s SB could be eventually made out but getting the original font style was a little more challenging. Due to the age of the ring it required a complete re-shank. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, the shank is commonly referred to as a band. A re-shank involves cutting and replacing the band of the ring. The shoulder and above remain intact retaining the original engraving on the inside. Starting with the shank, the metal is alloyed as required before being rolled out. Heating the gold to temperature a drawing mill is used to get it to the required length. The shank is then formed to the required length. The shank ends are fused together and it can then be hammered to size. The claws (or bezel) are cut out for the centre stone to sit in. The two are then soldered and joined together. Setting the stones follows and this is one of the hardest parts of the creation. A skillful hand is needed to ensure gems aren’t cleaved along the way. Polishing is the final step and your piece is almost ready for you. No matter what gemstone you choose, be sure to do some research beforehand. Learn about the grading system and durability of the gem so you can select a high-quality gem. Diamonds are graded with the ‘Four Cs’ of carat, cut, colour and clarity which are used to determine their value. When sourcing a diamond for our clients we only buy diamonds that have GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certification. The GIA is a not-for-profit institute considered to be the world’s primary expert body on diamonds. The majority of Diamonds used in Sara Handmade Jewellery pieces have been awarded GIA certification. In addition to choosing a stone you will also need to choose a cut or the shape of the stone. Cheaper varieties such as Black Tourmalines are also mined with industrial uses in mind or are turned into powder for electronics. By far the most valuable of all Tourmaline is the renowned Paraiba or copper bearing Tourmaline. The sapphires however, are still known industry wide as Ceylon Sapphires today and we will refer to them as that throughout this article. The history of gem mining in Sri Lanka is over 2,500 years old. Sri Lanka was even at one stage referred to as Rathna-Dweepa, meaning ‘Gem Island’ in Sinhalese. There are basically three types of pearls: natural, cultured and imitation. Natural Pearls (also referred to as oriental pearls) form when an irritant - normally a parasite, not a grain of sand as the common myth goes, works its way into the shell of certain mollusks. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk seals off the irritation by coating the irritant in a fluid.
