Coloured Stone Engagement Ring Settings & Durability

Just as coloured gems differ greatly from each other, so does their hardness. When deciding on a stone for your engagement ring, it is important to pick something durable enough for your lifestyle.

The setting you choose for your engagement ring is an important factor to consider. A rings setting will impact the comfort of your ring, how it sits on your hand and its durability over time. It will also affect how much light passes through your hero gemstone.

Different coloured precious metals can look better with certain gems. The right metal will make gemstone really pop and stand out. Talk with a jewellery designer to ensure you get the most from the gemstone you choose and have your questions on coloured gem rings answered.

What Our Customers Say

Tourmaline Engagement Rings

Tourmaline is found in more colours than any other gemstone so there is tourmaline that suits all tastes. Its wide range of colours has often seen tourmaline mistaken for other gems like sapphires, rubies and emeralds.

With a hardness of 7-7.50 a tourmaline can be scratched easier than diamonds and sapphires. It is however, durable enough for easy to care for jewellery.  Tourmaline is sustainable and makes stunning engagement rings that can stand the test of time when cared for in the right setting. A tourmaline bridal set were my own choice and I’m still extremely happy with them both.

Sapphire Engagement Rings

The most popular diamond alternative engagement ring feature sapphires. A variety of the mineral corundum, sapphire has a hardness of 9 making it extremely durable and perfect for engagement rings.

Found in many locations around the world, sapphires come in a large variety of different colours. Similar in colour to fancy-coloured diamonds, sapphires are available with all the beauty at fraction of the cost. Sapphire engagement rings symbolise loyalty and here are some popular sapphire engagement ring choices;

  • Blue Sapphire Engagement Rings – The most well-known and famous of all coloured sapphires.

  • Pink Sapphire Engagement Rings – Ranging from pale to vivid pinks and often used as an affordable alternative to pink diamond.

  • Yellow Sapphire Engagement Rings – Eye-catching yellow stones that make brilliant engagement rings and cost affective diamond alternative.

  • White Sapphire Engagement Rings – The colourless variety of not only looks like a diamond but is also hard enough to wear every day.

  • Teal Sapphire Engagement Rings – Continue to grow in popularity and varieties in this colour can be found in Australia, Africa and Montana.
