What are Pink Diamonds?
Pink diamonds are fancy coloured diamonds with a pinkish to reddish hue. Although most coloured gems achieve colour variations by chemical impurities or trace minerals, this is not the case for pink diamonds.
The reason pink diamonds achieve their stunning colour is still not known and the reason is often the topic of much debate in the gemmological community. The most commonly accepted theory is that the colour is achieved due to plastic deformation that is undergone while they are formed.
The rarity, natural beauty and prestige associated with pink diamonds, makes them a highly coveted addition to any fine jewellery collection.
Where are Pink Diamonds Found?
Pink diamond is the rarest of all diamonds except red diamonds. Pink diamonds, over time, have been found in Brazil, India, South Africa, Russia, Canada and Australia. The most productive, by far, was the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia. During its 37 years in operation, the Argyle mine produced 90% of the world’s pink diamond supply.
It is said that only one carat of sellable pink diamonds will come from every one million carats of diamonds mined. Rarity of pink diamonds will only increase with the closure of the Argyle mine in 2020.

Grading and Evaluating Pink Diamond Colours
Pink diamonds are valued and graded by how strong the colour is in the particular gem. A diamond that has a more intense colour is generally more sort after and valued a lot higher than one with a faint pink colour. As mentioned previously, pink diamonds often have a secondary colour like purple, orange or brown. withinin the stone. These secondary overtones also alter the value of a specimen.
