Where Does Canberra Go to Redesign and Remodel Jewellery?

Why Canberra Looks to Kiama for Jewellery Remodelling

During the holiday season, Canberran’s flock to the NSW South Coast to spend their time among the picturesque beaches and boutique shopping. The proximity to Australia’s capital makes Kiama the perfect destinations for a holiday, weekend away or overnight trip. A lot of our out-of-town client’s come from Canberra, and we are seeing more and more people from the ACT visiting us for their jewellery remodelling.

We are sort out by people wanting innovative designs rather than the same-old traditional styles of jewellery.

Remodelling jewellery takes your existing jewellery and gemstones and redesigns them into a brand-new creation. It is a more sustainable way to create an heirloom, lessoning the environmental impact of mining new gems. It is also the perfect way to keep the sentimental meaning of your jewellery in a design that suits your own style.

People have bespoke jewellery made for different occasions; this repurposed piece was a 21st gift designed by the birthday girl. After a brief phone call about the project, the initial consultation was made via email.

Bring Photos as Inspiration During your Design Consultation

We were provided with some photos for inspirations and a couple of existing rings that could be used in the new piece. The first ring was a multi-stone wide band ring with five diamonds and an assortment of coloured gems. The second a solitaire diamond ring.

The new ring was to be everyday-wear-friendly and flat to avoid catching on things. The preferred design would have a larger diamond in the middle, with one or two smaller diamonds on either side. The shape of the diamonds was not important, so the inspirational photo was just that, for inspiration.

Although its a long way from where we ended up, this is one of the photos that was provided to help inspire the new design.

Repurposing Diamonds from a Sentimental Ring

The wideband ring had appropriately sized diamonds for the desired setting. The solitaire diamond was too large and ‘engagement-ringy’ to fit with the existing gemstones. When remodelling jewellery, the new piece can be made with new or recycled gold. Melting down your old gold does loose around 30% of the gold weight in dirty alloys.

We met face-to-face in Kiama and together, agreed on the final design. We received the ring we would work with and could begin disassembling it to measure the gems that would become part of the new ring.

Having this Old Ring Redesigned was the Perfect Gift

After crafting the ring, we provided the client with some photos of the finished piece before having it couriered to her home near Canberra. We generally don’t like to show our client’s a picture the ring before collection as it is a major buzz seeing our happy clients when they first see their new piece of jewellery. It is however, something we will have to get used to as more bespoke jewellery projects are engaged with customers from further afield.
